The removal of an asbestos-riddled ceiling has led to a $140,000 upgrade of facilities at the Queen’s Park Golf Club.

Southland’s largest golf club will feature a completely revamped ground floor with new changing rooms, toilets, showers, offices and foyer area when work is completed next month.

Next weekend’s inaugural Clash of the Codes tournament will feature Southland’s elite sporting trio – the Steel, Sharks and Stags – but there won’t be a ball in sight.

Instead, members of the three franchise teams will be armed with a racquet and shuttlecock to do battle on the badminton court alongside New Zealand’s Commonwealth Games team, which is due to be named next week.

*** ILT Foundation funding lights for Fishing Cutter Boat

THE ILT Foundation is doing its bit to make sure the lights will soon be shining brightly on a significant piece of Invercargill’s maritime history.

A replica 1900s fishing cutter boat, which sits on the reserve next to the Stead Street wharf by the estuary, will soon have lights installed around it to improve and protect the display and boardwalk. The ILT Foundation has approved a grant of $10,000 for the provision of lights, but that funding follows an original $32,000 contribution it made last year to construct the concrete-laden replica vessel.
